Let's step back in time to the 15th Century as we climb aboard a caravel, a type of ship used during the Age of Discovery…. Three times over the past seven years, our family has had the opportunity to explore a floating living history museum comprised of replicas of two of Columbus' ships, the Nina and the Pinta.You can step aboard this unique living history experience as the ships sail.

#1 Posted January 9, 2022 (edited) Happy new year! This is my first project of 2022. I finished lots of precise plastic models including two 1/700 photo etched warships last year. I would like to re-focus on wooden model ships this year. This build log will stick to manufacture's manual and very straight build in most case for faster progress.

Caravel Santa Maria. During 1991 she was converted to the 15th century Caravel Santa Maria for Ridley Scott's film 1492: Conquest of Paradise. The ship was known as Santa Maria until, in 1996, due to increasing demand for period square-riggers, she was converted into a 2 masted Brig and reverted to her original name Phoenix of Dell Quay.

We built the Santa Maria to basically be a larger caravel, even though she was a carrack, because really, the most important part of her story to us at this time was her shipwreck near present-day Haiti (her wreckage was used to build a fort, with some of her crewmen left in charge. Things did not go well at that fort and with those crewmen).
